First Grade Snacks: Crayon Pretzels

Gage's first grade teacher has requested that parents bring in snacks once a month. And of course the thought of bringing in cheese crackers or the usual not filling, boring yuck, bores me out of my mind. Sooooo I have made it my goal to bring in a creative, cool, somewhat healthy, snack once a month. Here is what we did for September... Crayon Pretzels.

Ingredients:
  • Pretzel rods  (2 bags)
  • Melting Chocolate ( 2-3 bags -- I used white chocolate chips)
  • Food coloring
  • Colored paper
  • Template for labels

Directions:
  • Cut the rods in half very carefully with a serrated blade.
  • Melt the candy in a double boiler or microwave ( I used the stove)
  • Dip the ends of each pretzel (both sides)  in colored chocolate
  • Place on wax paper to cool and harden
  • Tape wrappers onto pretzels when cool and hardened.  The kids will have to pull them off before they eat them.

I had Gage help me to dip the ends of each pretzel. he has a great time and was really proud that he got to help make his classes snack.

Pretzels in the works :)

Final Product! I put these in a little clear, plastic rectangle box that looked like a pencil box. It was a huge hit with the kids. They weren't sure they could eat them at first lol.

Note: Be carefull when adding the food coloring. It contains water which can cause your melted chocolate to clump. Just add it in a couple drops and a time and you should be fine.
